Types of Cannabinoids

Is THCP Safe?

Not even the most enthusiastic cannabis aficionado in the 60s would have guessed that the cannabis plant would offer so many more options than what was available at the time. Even up until the 2010s the expansion of cannabis products was minimal beyond psychoactive edibles.

But now:

We have a great assortment of, not only products but different naturally occurring cannabinoids to choose from. Even better, many of them are now available legally.

THCP is one of the cannabinoids that is beginning to gain traction and grow in popularity in the past few years, perhaps because it was only discovered in 2019. But how can we ensure that a product that has been around for such a short period of time is safe?

Hemmfy carries an incredibly wide variety of hemp-derived products, including one of the largest online selections of CBD products, but also collections for other more ‘exotic’ cannabinoids like THC-O, Delta 8 THC, and Delta 10 THC.

What is THCP

Cannabinoids are the main constituents of the cannabis plant and the primary reason why cannabis is so popular in the first place. But not all cannabinoids are the same.

In fact:

All cannabinoids are not even made by cannabis, some of them are even man-made or made by the body itself. But we won’t get into much detail there right now. However, knowing about it makes it even more interesting that THCP can only be found in the cannabis plant and the fact that it is an extremely rare component.

THCP is a phytocannabinoid, which means it is naturally occurring in the cannabis plant. Unlike THC and CBD, decarboxylation is not needed to obtain THCP, which makes THCP products even more special.

THCP was discovered in 2019 in a study led by a team of Italian researchers.

While THC and THCP are both incredibly similar in molecular structure, they are not entirely the same. THCP has seven carbon atoms and THC only has five. While this sounds like an inadvertent fact, it’s far from it. Actually, this might be the reason why THCP is suspected to be up to 33x more potent than Delta 9 THC.

Is THCP Really 33-Times More Potent Than Delta 9 THC?

THCP was discovered in the same study as CBDP. Once isolated, the two compounds were confirmed as natural novel cannabinoids.

The second step of the process was an in vitro experiment with cultured cells where the binding capability to endocannabinoid receptors of THCP was tested. This part of the experiment compared that binding affinity to that of other cannabinoids and proved that THCP was approximately 33-times more active than Delta 9 THC. This was true even at concentrations in the initial sample of more than a thousand times lower than D9 THC.

THCP Edibles

The third step in the process was an experiment on mice that proved that the effects of THCP are similar to those of D9 THC as well.

These are the findings of a single study and unfortunately cannot be called conclusive. But they definitely give manufacturers enough reason to keep digging into the effects of THCP on the body.

THCP is a naturally occurring cannabinoid, primarily sourced from the hemp plant for the legal market. THCP as a cannabinoid has also been described as up to 33-times more potent than Delta 9 THC according to an experiment conducted by the researchers who discovered it in 2019. Aside from that, not much is known about THCP safety but this same discovery tells us that it interacts with the body in a very similar way as Delta 9 THC, which could trigger a few conclusions around its safety.

The knowledge around CBD and other cannabis-derived products is growing and constantly changing, as does their legal status. Hence, we recommend checking with your local authorities and a licensed physician prior to consumption.
