Types of Cannabinoids

What Is THCP?

There are hundreds of cannabinoids and hemp-derived products to choose from, all of which have been around for a long time. But the cannabis plant is so complete and we know so little of it that every year there seems to be a new use discovered for it.

A perfect example is the discovery of THCP, a phytocannabinoid that is only recently hitting the market and already having a huge impact.

What Is THCP?

Phytocannabinoids are cannabinoids naturally produced by and derived from the cannabis plant. They are found mostly within the trichomes that grow on the surface of the plant’s leaves and flowering heads.

You’ve probably heard this term to describe the acidic forms of CBD and THC. THCP is another one of these naturally occurring compounds.

In other words:

THCP is produced within the plant without the need for additional processes that may include drying and curing.

THCP was first discovered by an Italian team of researchers in 2019 by accident, or so the stories tell. THC and THCP are incredibly similar to one another on a molecular level, which could explain why it was not discovered until 2019.

The only difference between both molecules is that THC has a chemical structure that consists of five carbon atoms while THCP has seven.  More research is needed to identify how the effects of one differ from the other, but the difference in molecular structure allows experts to theorize. It is believed that this small difference in carbon atoms could make THCP a much more potent cannabinoid than its counterpart.

How Is THCP Made?

How Is THCP Made

CBGA or Cannabigerolic Acid is known as “The Mother Cannabinoid” for a reason; it is a phytocannabinoid that slowly and naturally changes as the hemp plant grows. These natural changes allow CBGA to gradually mature through enzymatic reactions and transform into other phytocannabinoids.

CBGA can change into many different cannabinoids depending on the maturity of the plant. At different stages during this maturation process, CBGA may have different chemical structures.

One of the acidic phytocannabinoids it may become is THCPA. Once the plant is submitted to decarboxylation, THCPA will become THCP.

THCP Effects

Nothing can be said for certain because the effects of cannabinoids are strongly tied to the physical characteristics of the consumer. Pre-existing medical conditions, strain, dose, tolerance, and weight are all factors that play an important role in the effects a cannabinoid may have on a person. The same goes for THCP.

THCP and Drug Tests

Regular THC turns up in most drug tests. Because the chemical makeup of THCP is very similar to that of THC, it is likely to appear on a blood or urine test.

However:

There is not enough evidence to determine exactly how long THCP stays in the body or how much you need to take in order for it to show up on a drug test. For the time being, the best advice we have is; discretion.

Hemmfy articles and blogs are meant to entertain and educate. However, we are not medical professionals and do not intend to give medical advice through them.

The knowledge around CBD and other cannabis-derived products is growing and constantly changing, as does their legal status. Hence, we recommend checking with your local authorities and a licensed physician prior to consumption.
