Choosing CBD Oil Products for Your Dog [Everything You Need to Know About Potential Side Effects]

Presently, in the United States, over 90 million dogs make up part of the population of our households. And while some people may possess a dog for protection or breeding and other purposes, our dogs do very much become part of the family for most Americans.

Like parents of human children, dog owners also possess a deep concern for their fur babies' physical and emotional health. So it's not surprising that the holistic health movement found its way over to the animal world. We pay close attention to what we feed our dogs, and we read labels carefully when picking out their everyday food.

If our pet faces challenges or displays problems, we often turn to natural supplements to ease their ailments. However, with an overabundance of vitamin, mineral, and herbal supplements available, choosing the right one for your dog may prove challenging. Of course, consulting with your veterinarian always represents a good idea, but CBD oil for dogs continues to gain popularity as a healthful supplement for your pet.

How and Why CBD Oil Works for Your Pet

Hemp-derived CBD oil comes from the same species of the cannabis Sativa plant as the marijuana plant. But don't worry; CBD oil will not get your pup high. To qualify as hemp, the plant must contain less than .3% tetrahydrocannabinol or THC. THC represents the most notable cannabinoid in the marijuana plant with psychoactive properties and delivers a euphoric high.

Both hemp and marijuana plants come with a plethora of different cannabinoids. However, Cannabidiol or CBD found in the hemp plant stands out as the most notable of the hemp-based cannabinoids.

How CBD Works With the ECS

Ever since a commissioned study on the effects of cannabis that began in the 1980s revealed that all mammals possess a series of endocannabinoids or small acidic molecules running through their bodies, numerous other studies have proved the same [4]. The endocannabinoid system or ECS serves to achieve or maintain balance or homeostasis.

The ECS itself, however, often suffers compromise both in humans and our pets. Compromise naturally occurs with age, but things like inherited autoimmune conditions, stress, and poor lifestyle choices contribute to a struggling ECS. Dogs, of course, don't smoke or drink alcohol, but they may suffer from anxiety or obesity. As dog's age, their ECS functions deplete just as they do with humans.

Cannabis and CBD help an ailing ECS because the hemp plant's internal system closely mimics that of the ECS. When CBD oil gets ingested or used topically, it works at the cellular level through C1 and C2 receptors to help the ECS target the problem and get closer to homeostasis.

Dogs share an ECS very similar to their human friends. So, dogs also benefit from the use of CBD oil. CBD oil for dogs may alleviate or help stave off the following conditions:

  • Aggressive or problematic behavior
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Arthritis and joint pain
  • Chronic pain

What About Side Effects?

CBD oil used as a supplement for dogs generally comes with very few adverse side effects and possibly even some benefits. We also haven’t been able to find official reports of overdoses when it comes to giving dogs CBD oil.

CBD presently gets the same FDA regulation treatment as other supplements, which means no action occurs unless they receive complaints from numerous customers.

The onus falls to the consumer to conduct the product research or minimally read labels and check with their Vet.

When you start your pet on CBD oil, watch for these possible side effects:

  • A dry mouth, when marked with decreased saliva, will result in increased thirst.
  • Lower blood pressure may register as detrimental or beneficial depending on your dog's blood pressure before starting the CBD regimen.
  • Drowsiness and lightheadedness that occur throughout the day may mean your dog requires a lower dose.
  • Upset stomach may show up as irregular stools.

If the effects seem rather severe such as vomiting or chronic itching, stop using the CBD until the symptoms completely subside and pay a visit to your veterinarian. This allows you to rule out other causes, such as diabetes for increased thirst. Once your pet appears symptom-free, follow your vet’s recommendations when re-introducing a CBD dose.

The quality of the CBD product may also contribute to adverse side effects. When purchasing a CBD oil supplemental product for your dog, consider the following to reduce the chance of side effects:

  • Look for hemp-derived organic CBD.
  • Make sure your product displays or makes a Certificate of Analysis or COA readily available. A COA ensures the product received third-party laboratory testing and free of toxins and heavy metals.
  • Make sure the product contains CBD oil. This step ensures an easier way to administer it to the dog and usually makes it more assimilable.
  • Don't cut corners when it comes to price.
