Dogs and Cannabinoids

Humans and all mammals have a system called the Endocannabinoid System (ECS),  believed to be involved in several physiological and cognitive processes. The ECS is composed of endocannabinoids and cannabinoid receptor proteins that can be found throughout the peripheral and central nervous systems, including the brain.

When a mammal ingests cannabinoids, studies suggest they bind to the receptors in the ECS, leading scientists to believe that cannabinoids could potentially alter the behavior of receptors and ultimately change the way these key physiological and cognitive functions mentioned above are performed.

However:

The proof of these changes is still inconclusive and the evidence remains mostly anecdotal, but the relationship between cannabinoids, like CBD and the ECS, have been documented in studies like this one.

Much of the knowledge surrounding CBD and other cannabinoids pertains to humans and animals, including most of the potential therapeutic benefits of cannabis.

What Is CBD for Dogs?

CBD for dogs is available through products like these that have been specifically formulated for animal consumption. While most forms of CBD, including CBD oils, topicals, and edibles, are intended for humans, they may also be consumed by pets. The dosage in human products is not, however, always equivalent for a small dog. The same concept applies to flavors, for instance, it’s much more likely that your dog will prefer a delicious CBD-infused steak treat instead of CBD-infused gummies.

A similar thing happens with topicals made from menthol and other added ingredients that humans enjoy but perhaps dogs detest. Luckily, at the Hemmfy CBD marketplace, you can find all of these products at amazing discounted prices that change every week.

What Does CBD Do for Dogs?

Several studies have found that CBD could have a positive effect on sleep, anxiety, stress, and muscle soreness. But these studies have assessed the effects of CBD specifically on humans, with the hope that the findings could translate to dogs according to the similarities between mammalian endocannabinoid systems. But we also understand that any serious dog owner would much rather see results from studies that prioritize dog-related issues.

In a 2018 study aimed at determining the safety and analgesic efficacy of CBD oil on dogs with Osteoarthritis, a post-study veterinary assessment concluded that CBD consumption demonstrated decreased pain during treatment without any delayed side effects reported by owners.

The methods used for the study included dosing the subjects with a placebo and CBD oil (2mg/kg) dose every 12 hours. Treatment lasted 4 weeks with a 2 week washout period. Results were taken from veterinary assessments, owner questionnaires, and hematological, physical, and serum chemistry examinations.

But not all dogs have an osteoarthritic problem. This is why you most likely want to know if cannabinoid consumption is safe for a healthy dog’s ear infection or other lesser ailments.

A 2020 preliminary investigation on the safety of escalating cannabinoid dosage in healthy dogs determined that dose escalation of CBD-predominant oil is just as safe as the placebo oil used in the experiment.

A more recent 2021 study on canine inflammatory response to CBD found that CBD may be able to reduce the inflammatory response induced by LPS stimulation in dog blood. In other words, CBD was found to modulate cytokine production stimulated by LPS and subsequently reduced the inflammatory response. But the same study was also very clear in concluding that its findings are not final, and actually encouraged more studies to better understand the potential therapeutic role of CBD in veterinary medicine.

A 2010 study specifically to investigate the correlation between cannabinoids and viral infections found that “The anti-inflammatory activity of cannabinoids may compromise host inflammatory responses to acute viral infections, but may be beneficial in persistent infections.”

The study also concluded that cannabinoids are likely not the best option for more serious viral infections like HIV-1. But the study was done in 2010 and more studies are needed to expand on the relationship between cannabinoids and viral infections.

A study published in January 2021 assessed the antimicrobial potential of CBD due to the antimicrobial resistance that threatens the effectiveness of modern medicine and the lack of modern therapeutics that address it. The results of the study demonstrate that “Cannabidiol has excellent activity against biofilms, little propensity to induce resistance, and topical in vivo efficacy.”

In other words:

There’s definitely a use for CBD in treating infections, both viral and microbial, but more published studies are needed in order to draw solid conclusions.
