Giving CBD to Your Cat: Here’s What You Need to Know

Chances are you already know the reasons why CBD is on everybody's radar. People are taking it in the morning for focus and in the evening to help get better sleep. Sports enthusiasts and professional athletes are taking it to help aid recovery. Multiple people with a wide range of medical conditions are taking it to cope with symptoms or combat the states themselves.

The applications of CBD in human beings are endless, but it was only in the past few years that the question arose; if CBD can help me cope with my anxiety, what are CBD effects for cats' anxiety?

The answer to this question has not been thoroughly answered. However, we have an excellent idea of the possibilities. We know how CBD interacts with the mammalian endocannabinoid system (ECS), and this opens a window into the potential benefits of CBD for cats and dogs.

Because the endocannabinoid system's design is very similar in all mammals, we can assume that the same kind of benefits found in using CBD on humans are also possible in cats. In other words, if the component is processed in the same way by cats and humans, then we can assume that it will also deliver the same effects in both subjects.

However, this does not mean that cats should take the same amount of CBD as humans or vice versa. It also doesn't mean that humans and cats share the same tolerance and tastes for the substance.

How to Use CBD Oil for Cats

Because of how the ECS works in cats, companies can provide the same product categories as they do for humans. The main difference between human products and cat products is the product's CBD potency, the flavors, and any additional pet-specific or human-specific ingredients included in the formula.

Perhaps the only product category that humans and cats do not share is anything vape related. That one is an easy one to deduce why; when was the last time you saw a cat pick up a vape pen?

The CBD oil dosage for cats is in high, medium, and low dosages. What those dosages look like is quite challenging to define without referencing a specific breed. Because breeds differ in size, it's impossible to determine a standard CBD oil dosage for cats

The best way to go about it is by starting with a minimal amount and taking the product label's advice. If the CBD oil dosage for cats you begin with seems to be too low, you can gradually work your way up from there. This caution reduces the risk of going over your cat's CBD tolerance and potentially causing a side effect.

The type of CBD cat product you should use will depend on your kitten's preference. Most pet owners find that they face less adversity with CBD cat treats than other products like capsules and sublingual drops. Cats usually like treats, whether they are CBD cat treats or just the regular kind, this way, so there's not battling with your kitten to give them their medicine. However, this will ultimately depend on what your cat has to say about it.

Side Effects of CBD on Cats [What the Research Says]

The possibility of encountering adverse effects exists in almost every single product for every single race. Fortunately, most of the side effects we know about seem to be strictly dose-related in the case of CBD.

CBD oil for cats has generally been deemed safe by veterinarians and studies. Still, it is possible to run into adverse effects like excessive licking and head-shaking during oil administration.

Other possible side effects include gastrointestinal distress and a degree of sedation. These side effects can be quickly dealt with by discontinuing the consumption of the substance, changing the dose administered, or changing the consumption method.

Gastrointestinal distress may be caused by a dose that exceeds your cat's tolerance level, so changing the amount of CBD administered will likely help. However, if this doesn't work, it might be worth staying away from edible products and trying out different approaches like sublingual drops. Some cat owners have also puffed CBD vapor into their cat's face, but we do not recommend doing this because the effects of inhaling vapor or CBD on cats have not proven safe as of yet.

What Do Vets Say About CBD For Cats?

Most vets seem to think that CBD's more significant issue for cats is the lack of official information and knowledge around it. This consequently results in overdoses and unwanted side effects like those mentioned above. Not only that but administering a neglectful dose could have an adverse impact. Going overboard with the amount does not necessarily mean that the effect will be more substantial. It just means they will be different from what you expect.

As licensed professionals, veterinarians are also responsible for recommending treatments that they trust, and most importantly, treatments that they know work for cats. While CBD for cats has been linked to anxiety, pain, seizures, inflammation, appetite stimulation, and other CBD for cats benefits, the fact of the matter is that several different medications have gone through rigorous testing, and safety studies are FDA approved. On the other hand, CBD has not gone through the same ordeal, making it a poorly understood substance and even more poorly understood treatment to such severe conditions.

All-in-all, CBD can be considered relatively safe. Still, a licensed veterinarian would not suggest it unless they know it's tested for safety following FDA regulations, which is something that no vet can guarantee at the moment.

Does CBD Help Cats? - Potential Benefits

CBD's long-term effects on animals, cats, dogs, and humans remain vastly unknown. The mammalian body component's therapeutic benefits have been studied in-depth, and the results are incredibly encouraging.

The impact of CBD on cats has yet to be determined, and the pharmacokinetic parameters of CBD dosing have to be defined. Rigorous clinical trials need to be undertaken and to help define them. While the CBD pet industry is booming, the fact is that the real efficacy of cannabis-derived products on specific ailments is unknown.

However:

If human and pet clinical studies tell us anything about it. We can start by defining a few potential benefits and positive effects of CBD cat treats:

  • Reducing Aggression
  • Relieving Anxiety
  • Reducing Inflammation
  • Regulating Appetite
  • Relieving Chronic Pain
  • Boosting Energy
  • Seizure Control

We can mention these CBD for cats' benefits because of what we know of CBD in humans and how the ECS operates, but not because we have official and conclusive information that allows us to confirm it. Even in humans, the benefits of CBD are still inconclusive and lack much more in-depth research.

This does not mean that the information available to us at the moment is not encouraging. The reasoning behind it makes sense, and the steps being taken to conclude the right ones to take. This only means that we haven't taken all the steps yet.

Hemmfy articles and blogs are meant to entertain and educate. However, we are not medical professionals and do not intend to give medical advice through them.

The knowledge around CBD and other cannabis-derived products is growing and constantly changing, as does their legal status. Hence, we recommend checking with your local authorities and a licensed physician prior to consumption.
