Is CBD for Dog Allergies a Thing? Does It Actually Work?

If you’re anything like me, then it means you didn’t even know that dog allergies were a thing. But from dog trainer friends and pet owners we’ve learned that watching your pet struggle with allergy symptoms can be pretty difficult.

Itching, scratching, sniffing, and lack of sleep are what usually happens with allergies. Dog or not. Even though we might not know much about it when it comes to dogs, you and I both know from first-hand experience that allergies can be quite a handful.

Another thing we know quite a bit about is CBD and cannabis in general. Because of this, we’ve learned that there are studies that have investigated the potential effectiveness of CBD in combating allergies in dogs.

Not to mention, the number of vets and dog owners that look for an alternative solution in CBD seems to be growing by the day. Along with the number of brands that are trying to make a business out of this new niche in the cannabis market.

That said:

We decided to take a deeper look into CBD for dog allergies and took it upon ourselves to understand the relationship between CBD oil and allergies. That, in parallel to answering questions like; Does CBD oil help with allergies?

What Is CBD Oil for Allergies?

Before we can thoroughly answer that question, we first have to understand what allergies are and what we mean when we say “treating allergies”.

Allergies are often harmless, but they can be incredibly annoying. All they are is just your body’s natural reaction to external stimuli like pollen and dust.

In more serious situations that reaction might be caused by food like tree nuts or seafood, which should be treated by a licensed physician as in more serious cases the allergic reaction can become life-threatening.

Regardless:

When allergies can be controlled, ‘treating’ them usually means taking the necessary steps to reduce the strength of the symptoms. Allowing you to suffer less from sniffles, inflammation, and the lack of sleep that comes with these.

With that piece of information in mind, what would your pet gain from taking CBD for dogs when a sudden attack of allergies kicks in?

Truth be told, we can’t say much conclusively. But what we do know is how CBD works when it enters your dog’s bloodstream.

Like any other mammal, your dog has an Endocannabinoid System, or ECS for short. The ECS is the main system in the mammalian body in charge of interacting with cannabinoids. The way this interaction happens is through a series of receptors called, you guessed it, Endocannabinoid Receptors.

But these receptors have other functions as well. Some of them have been related to sleep and rest functions, others to cognitive functions, and the list goes on. Once cannabinoids enter the bloodstream they latch onto these receptors. Therefore, potentially affecting the way these functions are performed [1].

For better or for worse, it is suspected that cannabinoids may have an impact on the receptor’s main functions. When these receptors are related to allergic reactions, we can naturally draw the conclusion of CBD having an impact on allergies from this knowledge alone.

Unfortunately:

This is not 100% proven and as it stands, is very much just a theoretical conclusion. Although there are studies like (Campora et al., 2012) that suggest that cannabinoids could protect against the effects of immune-mediated and inflammatory allergic disorders in dogs [2].

Other studies like this 2007 study have demonstrated that the endocannabinoid system plays a protective role in contact allergy in the skin and suggest there is potential for therapeutic interventions through it. Whether or not this intervention can be achieved through cannabinoid consumption is yet to be confirmed [3].
