Top CBD Products for Pets in 2022 [A CBD Pet Products Buyer’s Guide]

Almost halfway into 2021, we have now gathered enough information to know this year's best-selling CBD pet products to date. Which is probably the reason why you’re here.

The range of CBD pet product categories is incredibly ample. So we decided to focus on oils and treats.

Best CBD for Pets

CBD pet products can be found in many categories, but we’ve decided to focus on Oils and Treats for cats and dogs for this list. Below you’ll find our best sellers for each type.

Top CBD Oil for Pets

CBD oil for pets is CBD extracts that have been diluted into a carrier oil that makes it easier for the body to process and absorb. Oils can also be infused with natural flavors that make them more flavorful for pets.

For instance, some of our most popular oils for cats are salmon flavored, and some of our most popular CBD oils for dogs, maybe peanut butter or bacon flavored.

Edible oils also offer you the possibility of mixing the oil with your pet’s food. So if you have a picky pet who is not willing to let you feed it oil directly, you can always mix it in with food. While absorption will be slower this way, it might be an excellent way to avoid wastage.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive compound found in the Cannabis Sativa plant. CBD is more prevalent in hemp, a non-psychoactive variety of cannabis.

Cannabis is made up of more than 500+ compounds. Around 113 are cannabinoids, the main constituents of the cannabis plant and the main reason why cannabis is so sought after.

There are other compounds found in cannabis. Flavonoids, terpenes, and a few others can also be found in the plant.

There are two primary varieties of Cannabis Sativa; Hemp and Marijuana.

Marijuana is a variety of the plant with a high Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content, the only psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis. This being the main reason why marijuana is still not federally legal in the U.S.

Hemp is a non-psychoactive variety of the plant with less than 0.3% THC content per unit of dry weight. This subsequently explains why hemp and all hemp-derived products are federally legal.

Hemp has a more extensive CBD content than marijuana, making hemp crops extremely valuable as they are the primary source of legal CBD in the world.

What are CBD Pet Products?

CBD is extracted from the hemp plant once the bud has been harvested. This extraction process results in a CBD extract used as a raw material for CBD-based products.

The fresh or dry/curated hemp is  taken by the extraction experts and submitted to a series of external influences. Extraction processes can vary from solventless to solvent-based extraction.

Regardless of the extraction method used, the result is always a type of extract that depends on the process utilized. The kinds of CBD extracts available are:

  • Full Spectrum Extract
  • Broad Spectrum Extract
  • CBD Isolate

Full Spectrum extract contains a balanced mix of ALL cannabinoids and compounds, including THC. However, THC content is kept to a maximum of 0.3% per unit of dry weight.

Broad Spectrum extract is similar to Full Spectrum, but the content of THC is always 0%. Other than that, they’re the same.

CBD Isolate only contains CBD content and bypasses any other component of the plant entirely.

The resulting extract can be diluted into a carrier oil to make CBD oil. CBD oil can then be used as a finished product or used as a raw material to infuse CBD into other goods like topicals, edibles, vape juices, and CBD pet products.

CBD Benefits for Pets

CBD has very similar effects on most mammals, making it easy to predict potential CBD benefits for pets.

While most evidence is mainly anecdotal, the most common benefits of CBD identified by pet owners are:

1. Seizure Control

2. Pain Relief

3. Stress Relief

4. Anti-Inflammatory Effects

5. Anxiety Suppression

6. Skin & Allergy Applications

How Much CBD Can I Give My Pet?

We strongly suggest that you follow the product’s instructions. Pet CBD doses will vary greatly depending on the type and size of your pet you are buying products.

The first step towards accurate dosing that provides your pet with the best results is identifying the size and weight of the animal. Each brand may have standardized instructions based on size and type of pet, but if that’s not the case, we suggest you start at a small dose and slowly work your way up as you begin to see results.

You will need to keep a log to see how your pet reacts to each dose to identify their tolerance level.

The good thing about CBD is that side effects are almost always easy to fix. Gastrointestinal distress and drowsiness being some of the most common side effects detected so far. The CBD product potency you choose will depend on your pet’s overall tolerance level.

Is CBD Safe for Pets?

CBD pet products as specifically formulated with pets in mind. While many CBD pet products are still made with full-spectrum extract, THC content will always be kept to a maximum of 0.3%, making them non-psychoactive.

While there can be side effects to CBD consumption for pets and humans, the cannabinoid is mainly considered safe for both, and side effects are easily controlled by changing the dose. We suggest starting at low doses and slowly augmenting CBD intake as you understand your pet’s tolerance level.

You must always consult a veterinarian, especially if your pet is taking prescription medication.

The most common side effects include:

1. Nausea

2. Drowsiness

3. Upset Stomach

4. Fatigue

5. Reduced Appetite
