Every person that takes CBD, regardless of the type of product used, will arrive at different results.
The reason for this is that every person has a different tolerance when it comes to CBD consumption.
That said, it is impossible to arrive at an objective standard for what is considered a potent CBD oil because everyone will have a slightly different tolerance.
However, based on the products we carry and what most people consider a potent CBD product, we can suggest a few of the most concentrated CBD products the market offers.
Difference Between Low and High Strength CBD Products
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. CBD is one of 113+ cannabinoids and 500+ components found in the cannabis plant in total.
The cannabis plant is composed of two main varieties; Hemp and Marijuana. CBD is usually extracted from Hemp, a non-psychoactive version of the cannabis plant that can be farmed and harvested legally in the U.S.
All of the CBD products you will find on this list are made with hemp-derived CBD extract, which means they are considered federally legal in the U.S.A.
Once extracted from the hemp plant, CBD extract can produce oil and other concentrates, which are then used to infuse a wide variety of finished goods. CBD product categories include vape juices, oils, edibles, and topicals, among a few others.
Every product will be made with a specific potency and a suggested serving size that alludes to the defined potency.
As we said above, the potency of the effects of the product on the body will depend on the consumer’s tolerance. The following estimates what most people would consider a high or low potency;
- High Potency: 60mg+ of CBD per serving.
- Mid-Level Potency: 20mg-60mg of CBD per serving
- Low Potency: <20mg of CBD per serving.

What Changes a Product’s CBD Potency?
1. Farming Method
The farming method used will affect the plant's chemical structure and composition. Organically grown plants will have a different composition than plants farmed using herbicides and pesticides. Indoor growth operations will also have a different composition than outdoor grown plants.
The type of farming method used could then affect the harvest's properties and effects on the body. Not only that, but it could also affect the amount of CBD content it carries, subsequently affecting the potency made from this particular plant's CBD extract.
2. Extraction Method
Companies have two main types of extraction methods to choose from; Solvent-based or Solventless extraction. Solve-based extraction methods use specific solvent solutions to extract specific compounds from the hemp plant, as you would expect from the names given to them. Solventless extraction doesn’t use any solvents and focuses on utilizing heat and pressure to extract the targeted compounds from the hemp plant.
Using solvents helps target specific compounds found within the plant, while solventless extraction can be less accurate when it comes to compound quantities within the resulting extract. Hence, the type of extraction method utilized may ultimately cause the final concentrate’s CBD potency to vary.
3. Extract Spectrum
Once the hemp flower buds have been submitted to the extraction method of choice, the resulting substance can be called an extract. The resulting extract can come in one of three different varieties; Full Spectrum CBD Extract, Broad Spectrum CBD Extract, or CBD Isolate.
Full Spectrum Extract contains up to 0.3% of Delta-9 THC, a high CBD content, and a balanced mix of all other cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. All of which are non-psychoactive components naturally found in the hemp plant. The low dose of Delta 9 THC makes this extract a non-psychoactive product.
Broad Spectrum CBD Extract is very similar in composition to Full Spectrum Extract. The only difference between the two is that Broad Spectrum contains 0% Delta-9 THC, which Full Spectrum can have up to 0.3% per unit of dry weight. The difference isn’t huge, but an important one for consumers that want to shy away entirely from D9 THC.
CBD Isolate is a type of hemp extract that contains only CBD content. It does not have any trace amounts of other hemp-derived or external ingredients. While CBD Isolate could be attractive for users who want to have a strict CBD experience, it is also one of the less flexible extracts available.
Why Use Low-Potency CBD Products?
Low-potency CBD might sound like an inefficient product you don’t want to waste your money on. But there isn’t anything further from the truth than a statement like that one.
Potencies do not identify a high-quality product from another one. CBD potencies are there to help you choose the right product for your specific needs.
As we mentioned before, every person has a different tolerance to different components, regardless of whether they’re extracted from the hemp or not. But in the case of CBD specifically, a low-potency product is the best option for consumers looking to micro-dose.
Low-potency products make it easier and more convenient to microdose, but the real question is, why do it?
By consuming small amounts of CBD throughout the day, anecdotal evidence suggests that people may feel an enhancement in productivity, focus, and energy. So, low-potency products and microdosing strategies are often utilized for this purpose.
Why Use High-Potency CBD Products?
As low-potency products should not be interpreted as low-quality products, high-potency products are not necessarily high-quality products.
Its potency does not define the quality of a CBD extract. It’s defined by the quality of the processes used to obtain it.
There are specific reasons why you would choose a high-potency CBD product. Because the amount of CBD intake per serving is bound to increase with high potency CBD products, the effects of CBD are expected to be stronger.
But according to anecdotal evidence, the effects are not only more potent but also different.
Higher doses of CBD are usually used to address stress, anxiety, sleeplessness, nausea, and pain. In other words, microdosing is commonly used to maintain an overall healthy lifestyle, while higher doses address specific symptoms immediately.
