CBD For Energy & Focus: Does it Actually Work?

CBD is famous for many benefits, amongst which stand out pain relief, sleep improvement, and anxiety reduction. If that’s all we know about CBD, and let’s face it, it’s everything we keep on hearing about it, then it’s hard to wrap our heads around the fact that it can also act as an energy booster. So, how can a product known mainly for enhancing relaxation and helping you unwind also improve your concentration and raise your energy levels?

To understand these benefits, we’ll first need to understand what the endocannabinoid system (ECS) is and how it works. The ECS was discovered in the 1990s by Israeli scientist Dr. Raphel Mechoulam. It’s been linked to and correlated with regular vital functions in our body, such as blood pressure, body temperature, and glucose levels.

The ECS is found in areas and tissues throughout the body (such as the brain, organs, immune cells, and glands) in the form of ‘endocannabinoid receptors’ and cannabinoids. Each cannabinoid and each endocannabinoid receptor has its own unique function and goal.

To make it simpler to understand, imagine a person had a head injury that gives them chronic neuropathic pain and the pain they’ve been prescribed for it is not helping in the least bit. In this case, the body will begin to secrete endocannabinoids that help reduce pain naturally.

What does CBD have to do with all this? Although the body makes cannabinoids naturally, it sometimes helps to dose with supplements to activate the endocannabinoids that your body needs to activate. For instance, in the case of lower back pain, you’ll need specific receptors located in your lower back muscles to be activated, so you would target them with a specific cannabinoid and product that targets that area specifically. CBD can be engineered and produced in a format that interacts with said receptors and activates them.

If you are still a little skeptical and confused, then please keep reading, we’ll try to keep it simple as we delve into what science has discovered.

A 2014 research publication explains that after microinjections of CBD were shot in the hypothalamus, neurons were activated, causing an increase in dopamine and alertness. In other words, the publication suggests that CBD has the ability to promote energy and concentration by causing an internal synergistic effect that causes an increase in dopamine and subsequently a positive effect on focus and alertness.

Is There a Specific Way to Use CBD for Energy and Focus?

Now that you know how CBD and the ECS work, the next step is to know which product suits you best. The most important thing is your consumption preferences and how they’ll impact your lifestyle.

Do you prefer a discreet and easy pill that allows you to travel easily or something you can keep at home and take on the go like a vape pen? Maybe you like to take a bath every night and would prefer to add it to that routine? Or are you a sweets person and are more likely to consume CBD edible in the form of gummies or candies? The possibilities are endless.

The key is to define where you’ll be taking CBD and what you plan to achieve. The good thing about CBD is that it’s not ‘high inducing’ so the time spectrum to consume CBD is way ampler than that of THC, which is something you want to be really smart about consuming during a workday.

How much CBD can I take?

If you are a newcomer, we recommend starting with small doses and working yourself up to the dose recommended for your size. Check in with your body regularly to see if you're taking enough, and change the doses when appropriate. CBD and cannabis brands in general tend to be very specific in terms of dose size, so there’s little to no risk of error.
