This is largely due to CBD and THC taking the limelight in recent years. Now, as people are discovering the benefits of Hemp again, many are starting to ask about other compounds, like CBN.

To first understand CBN or Cannabinol, a little background on Hemp and Cannabis is needed. There over 120+ compounds found naturally occurring in Hemp and Cannabis.
The majority of these components are known as cannabinoids, including CBD, CBG, CBN, THC, and others.
Other compounds in Hemp and Cannabis include terpenes and flavonoids, which give Hemp its iconic aromas and flavors. As you’ll learn, they also play an important role in the effects of Hemp and Cannabis.
All of these compounds combine to make what is referred to as the naturally occurring cannabinoid.
For clarity, Hemp and Cannabis are essentially the same plant species. The main difference between Hemp and Cannabis is the THC content. As defined by law, Hemp plants contain less than .3% THC.

From THC to CBN
CBN is an interesting cannabinoid compound. Whereas most cannabinoids and terpenes are synthesized from the cannabinoid CBGa within Hemp’s resinous flowers, CBN doesn’t form until the flowers begin to decay and oxidize.
Specifically, CBN is formed when THC is exposed to heat and oxygen, making it a byproduct of THC and the only cannabinoid not directly derived from CBG.
Since Hemp generally only contains trace amounts of THC, it won’t be able to produce much CBN as it decays. Instead, CBN is primarily sourced from THC-rich cannabis that has oxidized and aged. Typically, the longer that THC-rich cannabis ages, it will have more CBN and less THC.
This understanding of how CBN is formed from THC came into context recently during an archeological discovery in Western China when researchers unearthed a 2,500-year-old stone-filled wooden brazier used to burn cannabis during ritualistic ceremonies.
The evidence that the wooden device was used to burn THC-rich cannabis comes from a chemical analysis that found residue of CBN in the wood and stones, which could have only come from oxidized THC-rich cannabis.
Difference Between CBN, CBD, and THC
The main difference between CBN, CBD, and THC is that THC is the primary compound responsible for cannabis’ intoxicating effects.
Although it can be debated as to whether or not CBD and CBN are indeed “non-psychoactive”, they are generally defined as non-intoxicating and won’t make you feel high.
While the compounds aren’t intoxicating, they do alter brain chemistry in several ways, which could be considered as “psychoactive”. However, neither CBN nor CBD exerts psychoactive effects akin to THC-rich cannabis.
CBN is considered to have around one-tenth the potency of THC on cannabinoid receptors in the brain, meaning that, although the psychoactive effect of CBN may be debatable, it would take a lot to induce a similar intoxication to THC.

Studies on CBN’s Properties and Benefits
CBN acts similarly to other cannabinoids within the body by primarily targeting the endocannabinoid system.
Research indicates that CBN binds with cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2, with a higher affinity for CB2 receptors. It has also been seen to activate vanilloid receptors (TRPV2) and endocannabinoid tone.
Clinical research on CBN is mostly limited to experimental animal models, but early findings indicate that Cannabinol has unique properties, including –
- Anti-bacterial (MRSA resistant to antibiotics)
- Hypotensive effect on intraocular pressure (eye pressure)
One study on mice compared CBN, CBG, and CBD on the appetite behaviors in mice and found that –
- CBD decreased appetite and food intake
- CBN increased appetite and food intake
- CBG induced no changes to feeding behavior
These results indicate the CBN may have beneficial properties that increase appetite, but further research is required to confirm the effect in humans.
Another study administered 5mg/kg/day of CBN in mouse models of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, for 12 weeks.
The experiment’s results indicated that CBN delayed the onset of ALS by more than two weeks in the mice, however, it did not change their ultimate survival rate.
Other studies conducted in cats and mice suggest that CBN showed a reduction in intraocular eye pressure. This may indicate the cannabinoid’s potential benefit to afflictions of the eyes, such as glaucoma.
These studies and their preliminary findings indicate promising results, however, further research into the benefits of cannabinoids greatly warranted to validate any effect upon specific health conditions in humans.
CBN and Sleep
If you’ve read anything about CBN online, then you’ve likely been told that it’s the “sedative cannabinoid”. However, regardless of what advertisers would have you believe, this effect may not be entirely attributable to Cannabinol alone.
The concept that CBN is a powerful sedative-like substance isn’t exactly accurate. According to famed cannabis researcher, Dr. Ethan Russo –
“Pure CBN is not particularly sedating, but it is typically found in aged cannabis in which the monoterpenoids have evaporated leaving the more sedating oxygenated sesquiterpenoids.”
Terpenes, such as Myrcene and Linalool, are aromatic compounds found in Hemp, Cannabis and other plants, which are known to have sedative-like properties.
Further research dating back to the 1970s also suggests that it may be CBN in combination with THC that is responsible for the sedative-like properties observed from aged cannabis, rather than CBN alone.
In this manner, CBN is thought to synergize the effects of THC, enhancing the sedative effect of the psychoactive compound. This effect is referred to as the entourage effect, which you can learn more about in our article linked here.
So, it may not be CBN alone, but a combination of the naturally occurring compounds found in aged and oxidized Hemp and Cannabis responsible for sedative-like effects related to CBN.
While cannabinoid research is still in its infancy, early studies are promising. However, further research is still greatly needed to verify any positive results in humans.
